Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not Where I’m At Full disclosure – I do not have much knowledge or appreciation of eastern religions or philosophies. My roots are in western enlightenment thinking. I was brought up with the frequent admonishment that “If you can’t say something nice, keep quite”. If I were to follow that advice I would never have started this review. I understand Wondrium’s motivation in producing and offering the series; Deepak is a cult figure, and there are many who will pay to hear his thoughts. However, I am very glad that I didn’t have to pay much for this series, since my Wondrium subscription gives me access to many other offerings that I am very satisfied with. My unease about Deepak’s teaching, if that term can be used, is that it is right at the cusp between sounding very erudite and being gobbledygook, in my humble opinion. He uses much of the terminology of science, from biology to quantum mechanics, but in ways that are just not even wrong. (Thank you, Wolfgang Pauli) My working career has been in electronics and with software that controls equipment based on microprocessors. I understand that at one level the behavior of a system requires the hardware to have certain characteristics that are completely determined by physics. The added level of the software program introduces a complexity that emerges out of the combination and interaction of the hardware and the software. The integrated unit does not exist as a self-contained entity which, because it exists, causes the underlying hardware to exist. Something like that scenario appears to be what Deepak thinks happens with consciousness. To quote a relevant passage from the Wikipedia article on Deepak, but a thought repeatedly expressed in this series, “It is consciousness, he writes, that creates reality; we are not "physical machines that have somehow learned to think...[but] thoughts that have learned to create a physical machine". (referencing “Quantum Healing: Exploring the Frontiers of Mind Body Medicine”) Obviously, we do not yet understand how our mysterious consciousness/mind comes to be from the processes going on in our physical/biological brains. But we’d be better off waiting on better answers than this series offers in the teachings of Deepak Chopra.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very Disappointing The content of this course is presented in quasi-scientific language, and delivered as if it were a true representation of reality. It is not. The views represented here are not supported by science. I am extremely disappointed to find material of such poor quality, so at odds with current scientific understanding, being disseminated by a organization that built its reputation on the work of eminent scholars, gifted scientists, and legitimate experts in their fields.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Course I enjoyed Dr. Chopra's perspective on reality, which I am finding helpful in dealing with the stresses I face. The only reason I did not rate this a 5 star is because I would have liked to have an accompanying course book to review what was said and for the exact spelling of the mantras discussed in lecture 7 to better help me remember them. Also, I would have liked to know the title of the book he was reading from.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reality I tend to grapple a lot on what are the string of our reality due to my sickness and my way of living but this course open a road that I can take to be more centered and Id like to see where it lead me

Overview

Matter, energy, information and everything we consider reality—from your next thought to the most distant star—is simply a modified form of yourself. When you understand that you are the universe you unlock the spontaneous fulfillment of all your desires. Let’s go on a philosophical journey that is as delicately intangible and yet as deeply practical as your next breath.

Day 1: The Science of Reality

01: Day 1: The Science of Reality

What is real? How do we know it's real, and how does that deeper understanding of reality help us fulfill our dreams, desires, and intentions? So let's go for it. The dictionary definition of reality says simply enough, “Existence is real.” A rock exists. Rainbows exist. That which you call your body-mind exists. You experience these phenomena all the time. Now, if you go and ask a scientist what a rock, for example, is made of, all schools of science will say that matter is made of molecules, which are made of particles, which are made of energy, which has information in it. And as we go down this rabbit hole, what we end up with is what scientists today refer to as the quantum vacuum. The quantum vacuum is not something you can experience. It is an emptiness. It is a void. It exists as the potential for information and energy, which ultimately becomes everything physical. As we go beyond the appearance of molecules, we enter the subatomic cloud, and when we go beyond the subatomic cloud, we end up with... nothing. The essential nature of the physical world is that it's not physical. The essential nature of the material world is that it's not material. As Rumi says, “We come spinning out of nothingness scattering stars like dust.”

Day 2: Fundamental Experience

02: Day 2: Fundamental Experience

Let's shift away from the scientific model to a different way of looking at that which we call reality. You have a mind that is interpreting this experience. Look at your hand. There is a fundamental experience going on right now as you are observing your hand. And what is that experience? It's a combination of sensations that we call color, shape, texture. We call it that, but, well, we have to call it something. Where is that experience happening? For lack of a better word, it's happening in you. If you weren't having the experience of having a body, you would not know you had a body. Before we can label things, we have to experience them, and what we experience are perceptual fluctuations in our awareness. The awareness just is having an experience of itself. The experience occurs in consciousness, is known in consciousness, disappears in consciousness, and is made out of consciousness. Awareness is modifying itself into fluctuations called perceptions. Is your body the container of awareness, or is your body a changing, fluctuating experience in awareness? If you think you are your body, you have to tell me which one—baby, child, adult, et cetera. The reality is that you are a formless being, having an experience of form and phenomena.

Day 3: Dreaming Reality

03: Day 3: Dreaming Reality

You dream every night, and whether or not you remember a dream, it's still an experience you have. Usually you will dismiss it in the morning, saying, “It was just a dream,” meaning it was not real. And the reason it's not real is that you look back and the dream is not here, it's over. So a dream by definition is transient, evanescent, ephemeral, ungraspable. Even if you learn to lucid dream and be a witness of your dreams, you will see the dream is a shifting fluctuation of sensations, images, feelings, and thoughts. In the morning you will wake up to this reality and say, “This is real.” But let’s examine this reality a little more carefully. If I asked you what happened to your childhood, think about it. Evoke the memories and the experiences of your childhood. It’s very dreamlike. Think of what you ate for dinner last night. It's a dream. If I asked you what happened a minute ago, it's a dream. The past is a dream, the future is a dream, and the present is a lucid dream in a vivid now, which we call real. You are the dreamer and not the dream. You are the observer and not that which is observed. You are the knower, not that which is known.

Day 4: Fulfillment of Desire

04: Day 4: Fulfillment of Desire

If you don't know yourself, you can’t know anything else. This is called self-realization. You have to give up your compulsion (which is very difficult, but once in awhile you can do it) to label things, define them, and create a story and meaning out of them. It's all a projection of yourself. Just be a silent witness. Then, within that stillness, to ask, “Who am I? What is my purpose? What am I grateful for?” Don't chase the answers. Live the questions and life will move you into the answers. You will begin to have synchronicity, which is an inherent property of your being. You will start to experience meaningful coincidences. You will start to be at the right place at the right time. Desires cannot be ignored—they can only be fulfilled or they can be transcended. What is desire? Desire is a fundamental aspect of consciousness which takes the potential and makes it into what we call the actual. But the potential is the real reality and what we call the actual is the current dream. Desire is pure potentiality seeking manifestation. It is an inherent property of consciousness as it moves from the unmanifest to the manifest, from the invisible to the visible, from the spiritual into the material.

Day 5: Union with Yourself

05: Day 5: Union with Yourself

What is real? How do we know it's real, and how does that deeper understanding of reality help us fulfill our dreams, desires, and intentions? So let's go for it. The dictionary definition of reality says simply enough, “Existence is real.” A rock exists. Rainbows exist. That which you call your body-mind exists. You experience these phenomena all the time. Day 6: Daily Reflections

06: Day 6: Daily Reflections

This session focuses on seven phrases—you could call them sutras or mantras—to reflect on. Over time they will begin to change your reality of everyday experience. The basis of every sutra is that your identity is not local, but rather non-local. Your true identity is not form and phenomena, but the formless infinite that experiences itself as form and phenomena. And because that infinite being is all possibility, full of synchronicity, and spontaneously creative, then if you can remember to shift your provisional identity to your identity, that’s all you need to do.

Thank You

07: Thank You

Thank you for joining me for this course. As we discussed yesterday: Desire is a fundamental aspect of consciousness that takes the potential and makes it into what we call the actual. When you truly understand the nature of reality and align your desires with those of the universe, you will find that your life becomes a spontaneous unfoldment of joy, imagination, and creativity. Let us grow together as a community of conscious beings, and together we will work toward a more world of greater peace, justice, and sustainability.
