Rated 5 out of 5 by from A real gem! Glad I bought it! This is a great course on many levels. It will appeal to pianists, music historians, and those interested in piano design. I am an advanced amateur pianist, so I greatly enjoyed the performances by 3 excellent pianists, but I also enjoyed Prof. Greenberg's enclycopedic knowledge of music pedagogy and history. His educated sense of humor added much to the presentation, as when he opined Beethoven's and Liszt's compositions invited the pianist to "beat the snot out of the piano", or that Schumann's disinterest in the study of law as "the interest a vegan has in foie gras". An altogether pleasant and informative course!

Professor Greenberg presents interesting information about the composers and how the pieces came into being. Many excerpts accompany the lectures, although the works being presented are never played in full.

I’m retired now, but since I was a teenager, I’ve been listening to and enjoying classical music, both on records and CDs and in live concert performances, and have heard many of the pieces that the course discussed—some I like and some I don’t; however, I’ve no formal musical training, and I listen to a piece’s melody and the ebb and flow of the music’s changing melodies within the piece. So, my comments should be taken within that context. First off, I feel that this course is designed for people with formal musical training. I have a vague understanding of what a musical note is, but sharps, flats, chords, minor and major chords, keys, fifths, clefs, octaves, measures, bars, sonata form, etc. are foreign terms to me. Telling me that a piece has 540 measures, gives me no useful information. Does that mean that it takes ten minutes or twenty minutes to play? Would we describe a novel as having a thousand paragraphs? Musical terminology pervades the course, as the instructor gives detailed dissections of each musical piece, and it’s always assumed that the viewer understands the lingo. Not everyone wants to do a deep dive into the music; some are content to listen, enjoy and to be able to recognize a piece when it’s played. Next, professor Greenberg, who appears to be extremely knowledgeable, talks for about seventy-five to eighty percent of each lecture, dissecting each piece and generally presenting to the listener only disjointed snippets of the musical piece being discussed. The history/background on the piece’s composer as well as the history and differences between the harpsicord and piano are informative, and the female concert-pianists playing the snippets are a pleasure to watch, with their marvelous finger alacrity, dexterity and aggressive keyboard attacks, but the shortest snippets take only a few seconds to play, while the longest require a minute or so, unless--very rarely--the entire shortish musical section is played. With this approach, the music’s rise and fall, its melodic line is usually never found, and the listener hasn’t heard enough of the piece to even decide if its likable or worth hearing the entire piece. Finally, what qualifies a solo piano piece as one of the greatest, and not just a very good piece? Is it because musicians still like it, or it’s still being played a hundred or two hundred years after its composition, or because fifty influential musical critics say it is, or because the public likes the piece, or because the instructor says so? We are never given a clue, or at least not one that I caught. Shouldn’t the instructor be asked to justify his selections? Why pick Beethoven’s Appassionata Sonata, over his Moonlight or Pathetique Sonatas or Chopin’s Preludes over his Sonatas or Polonaises? Surely there are reasons. In many technical fields, there’s a saying that you don’t understand something, unless or until you can measure it. Well, this instructor never even tries. Professor Greenberg gets mostly good marks for his courses, but if this course is typical of his other courses, I don’t know why. I wouldn’t recommend this course to anyone, and I don’t know what others, perhaps even those that are musically trained, see in it either. I remember, many years ago, seeing several of Bernstein’s Young People's Concerts where he dissected Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, Respighi’s The Pines of Rome, and Britten’s A Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. Now, there was a man that could explain music!

Dr. Robert Greenberg will take you through the history of the piano through some of the best solo piano works and their composers. Dr Greenberg's lectures are full of knowledge, energy, passion, humour, and piano music. Highly recommended!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A superb tour of solo piano music Without a doubt, this is one of Professor Greenberg's finest courses. It's a superb tour of selected pieces of solo piano music, ranging from Bach to Prokofiev. If you decide to buy this course, be sure to get the DVD version, not the CD version. If you get the CD version, you will miss out on a large collection of historical photographs. Worse, you will miss the magnificent Steinway Grand Piano and the three concert pianists whose virtuosity at the keyboard will dazzle you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A fascinating learning experience As a music novice this course was a lot to take in, but it opened my eyes in so many ways to the intricacies and complexities of creating great music that transcends time. Just learning about the development of the piano and how it accommodated the composition of the music that was created was eye opening. Professor Greenberg packed so much into each lesson including the biographical data of the composers, contemporary history of the time and quoted reactions of their contemporaries. Although presented with utmost professionalism Professor Greenberg lightened it up with his humor and wit.

Dr. Robert Greenberg is Music Historian-in-Residence with San Francisco Performances. A graduate of Princeton University, Professor Greenberg holds a Ph.D. in Music Composition from the University of California, Berkeley. He has seen his compositions-which include more than 45 works for a wide variety of instrumental and vocal ensembles-performed all over the world, including New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, England, Ireland, Greece, Italy, and the Netherlands.

He has served on the faculties of the University of California, Berkeley; California State University, Hayward; and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and has lectured for some of the most prestigious musical and arts organizations in the United States, including the San Francisco Symphony, the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Van Cliburn Foundation, and the Chicago Symphony. For The Great Courses, he has recorded more than 500 lectures on a range of composers and classical music genres.

Professor Greenberg is a Steinway Artist. His many other honors include three Nicola de Lorenzo Composition Prizes and a Koussevitzky commission from the Library of Congress. He has been profiled in various major publications, including The Wall Street Journal; Inc. magazine; and the London Times.
