In this section you'll learn essential licks from players like B.B. King, Freddie King and Robben Ford. Eric's Turn - Lick 2

03: Eric's Turn - Lick 2

Eric's Turn - Lick 2 is a video guitar lesson presented by Jeff McErlain and is sourced from 50 Blues Guitar Licks You MUST Know. Chicago Flurry - Lick 13 is a video guitar lesson presented by Jeff McErlain and is sourced from 50 Blues Guitar Licks You MUST Know. Love the Overtones - Lick 30

05: Love the Overtones - Lick 30

Love the Overtones - Lick 30 is a video guitar lesson presented by Jeff McErlain and is sourced from 50 Blues Guitar Licks You MUST Know. The term overtone generally refers to a specific set of frequency components that appear above a musical tone. Got that? A note without overtones sounds like a beep you hear in a hearing test or a test pattern on a TV. Not very pleasant.

20: Long Way From Slow - Lick #20

Long Way From Slow - Lick #20 is a video guitar lesson presented by Corey Congilio and is sourced from 50 Texas Blues Licks You MUST Know. 21: Shuffle Over The Cliff - Lick #31

Shuffle Over The Cliff - Lick #31 is a video guitar lesson presented by Corey Congilio and is sourced from 50 Texas Blues Licks You MUST Know. EJ likes to use fast16th note triplet phrases. Mocamboxes - Lick 13 is a video guitar lesson presented by Anthony Stauffer and is sourced from 50 Monster SRV Licks You Must Know. 4 min
Threes - Lick 18

25: Threes - Lick 18

Threes - Lick 18 is a video guitar lesson presented by Anthony Stauffer and is sourced from 50 Monster SRV Licks You Must Know. In this next section we're going to focus on the song Pride And Joy. The tempo of this song is not great for playing extremely fast licks, so most of our difficulty comes in choosing licks with intricate picking.

5 min
Speed Bag - Lick 24

26: Speed Bag - Lick 24

Speed Bag - Lick 24 is a video guitar lesson presented by Anthony Stauffer and is sourced from 50 Monster SRV Licks You Must Know. The primary focus of this lick is the repeating 3-note lick played on the E and the B strings in Box 1. 5 min
Floor It - Lick 38

27: Floor It - Lick 38

Floor It - Lick 38 is a video guitar lesson presented by Anthony Stauffer and is sourced from 50 Monster SRV Licks You Must Know. Finally we'll slide all the way to the top of the octave before descending back into Box 1 with a series of hammer-ons and slides.

4 min
Illustrated Fury - Lick #27

30: Illustrated Fury - Lick #27

Illustrated Fury - Lick #27 is a video guitar lesson presented by Corey Congilio and is sourced from 50 Texas Blues Licks You MUST Know. Winter liked to bendand overbend. I say overbend because this lick highlights a bend on the 14th fret that is a one anda half step bend. This kind of lick will really start to move you in a newdirection and will help you begin to jump around the pentatonic scale.

5 min
Concepts and Insight - SECTION 3: Overview

31: Concepts and Insight - SECTION 3: Overview

In this section you will take a look at scale options for playing the blues. We often think of just the minor pentatonic, but here you will also work on the Composite blues scale, the Dominant blues scale, and even the half-whole diminished. Knowing these will let you add some different flavor to your licks.

1 min

32: Composite Blues Scale - Concept 6

7 min

34: Minor Pentatonic with 6th - Concept 8

Minor Pentatonic with 6th - Concept 8 is a video guitar lesson presented by Jeff McErlain and is sourced from Blues Guitar Survival Guide - Lead. Here is another interesting pentatonic scale that I learned from a Robben Ford video years ago and it really stuck with me. In this case we are replacing the b7 of the minor pentatonic scale with the natural 6th.

Lick Vocabulary 18 - Key of G Extended Position

35: Lick Vocabulary 18 - Key of G Extended Position

Lick Vocabulary 18 - Key of G Extended Position is a video guitar lesson presented by Andy Aledort and is sourced from Progressive Blues Power. One of my favorite things about playing in G is it allows one to start phrases very low on the neck before moving higher and higher on the board to create contrast. The scales illustrated here move between first and eighth position.

2 min
Lick Vocabulary 19 - Key of G 3rd Position (Std Box)

36: Lick Vocabulary 19 - Key of G 3rd Position (Std Box)

Lick Vocabulary 19 - Key of G 3rd Position (Std Box) is a video guitar lesson presented by Andy Aledort and is sourced from Progressive Blues Power. Though used less frequently, the 5th and 6th positions of G minor pentatonic and the G blues scale shown here work great both on their own and as a connecting piece between higher and lower positions. The many licks shown here offer testament to this fact.

4 min
Lick Vocabulary 20 - Key of G 5th & 6th Position

37: Lick Vocabulary 20 - Key of G 5th & 6th Position

Lick Vocabulary 20 - Key of G 5th & 6th Position is a video guitar lesson presented by Andy Aledort and is sourced from Progressive Blues Power. 2 min
Ultimate Rolling Lick - Concept 14

38: Ultimate Rolling Lick - Concept 14

Ultimate Rolling Lick - Concept 14 is a video guitar lesson presented by Mike Zito and is sourced from Blues Americana. Okay, this is just for sheer fun here. This is an almost "Van Halen Country" lick to me. Kind of out sounding but very cool. It can be just be for effect, but also can be musical if used to grab some attention and push into the next dramatic part of your solo.

7 min

39: GoTo Licks: A Half-Whole Diminished "Fordesque" Lick - Examples

GoTo Licks: A Half-Whole Diminished "Fordesque" Lick - Examples is a video guitar lesson presented by Jeff Scheetz and is sourced from Blues Jam Survival Guide. 1 min
Blue Six - Lick 5

42: Blue Six - Lick 5

Blue Six - Lick 5 is a video guitar lesson presented by Tom Wolfe and is sourced from 50 Hard Bop Blues Licks You MUST Know. This lick combines both the major 3rd and the blue 3rd demonstrating the interchangeability of the two tones in the blues solo. The 3rd when played below the root is a 6th below and gives a rich interval, that is punchy in a melody.

3 min
Major Pentatonic Blues - Lick 11

43: Major Pentatonic Blues - Lick 11

Major Pentatonic Blues - Lick 11 is a video guitar lesson presented by Tom Wolfe and is sourced from 50 Hard Bop Blues Licks You MUST Know. The blues scale is very close to the minor pentatonic scale, with the exception of the flatted-5th, they are identical. The major pentatonic scale is a five-note scale emphasizing the major 3rd and the 6th of the scale, rather than the flatted-7th.

46: Flexible Diminished - Lick 42

Flexible Diminished - Lick 42 is a video guitar lesson presented by Tom Wolfe and is sourced from 50 Hard Bop Blues Licks You MUST Know. 4 min
Parker Middle Four - Lick 48

47: Parker Middle Four - Lick 48

Parker Middle Four - Lick 48 is a video guitar lesson presented by Tom Wolfe and is sourced from 50 Hard Bop Blues Licks You MUST Know. The middle 4 bars of the Parker blues is also challenging to play. Rather than a dominant chord for the IV chord, it is a major 7th chord and then there is a half-step walk-down of ii-V's that can be tough to navigate.

4 min
Greasy Fingers - Lick 4

48: Greasy Fingers - Lick 4

Greasy Fingers - Lick 4 is a video guitar lesson presented by Jeff McErlain and is sourced from 50 Eclectic Blues Licks You MUST Know. 2 min
Dim Sum - Lick 32

52: Dim Sum - Lick 32

Dim Sum - Lick 32 is a video guitar lesson presented by Jeff McErlain and is sourced from 50 Eclectic Blues Licks You MUST Know. Here is a classic way to use a diminished scale in a blues. 3 min
Sco'in - Lick 36

53: Sco'in - Lick 36
