Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent research and presentation I have just listened to the fine presentation, Pirates, Fact and Fiction. Would love to hear a whole series on pirates by this teacher, or with her as one of the teachers. She did a great job in organizing and delivering her information, with great stories interspersed. A winsome teacher! Bravo!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fascinatingly interesting This was the first video I watched on this website. The professor is very clear. The topics are discussed quickly - I assume because this is only a pilot - and would benefit more from a full course on this subject. The editing needs to show more visuals. I would love to see this made into a full course.

Overview

From the Dread Pirate Roberts to Robert Louis Stevenson, join Professor Nush Powell to go back through history and sort out the fact from fiction across pop-culture portrayals of pirates.
Pirates: Fact and Fiction

01: Pirates: Fact and Fiction

Why do we think pirates say “arrrr?” Where did the practice of “walking the plank” come from? Did Blackbeard really light his beard on fire? Looking at movies, books, television, Professor Sam Kean examines some of the most notorious pirates through popular culture and determine which of these legends were based in historical truth.
