Rated 2 out of 5 by from Tough to Endure Yet another science course where the instructor just can relate to the non-PhD candidate in the listening audience. As an introductory course, I really don't need an excruciating discourse on how atoms splitting in the atmosphere affect the ozone layer, for instance. I got through seven lectures and couldn't endure anymore.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Thorough, but not engaging I mark the class up for its thoroughness. You get a good introduction to a lot of concepts used to understand weather. He focuses on high-level concepts and doesn't get into the underlying physics. Good choice. I mark it down because the lecturer lacks animation, the visual aids are primitive and there aren't enough of them, and because the lecturer personifies the weather, describing it as if it had purposes and goals.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not What I Expected But Somewhat Useful As per the word "Introduction" in the course's title, I had expected that it would cover only basic meteorology information, and provide rules of thumb on how to apply them to weather related information I see on my local 6:00pm "weather show". Instead, it covered heavy duty physics which had me wondering why he was covering things that deep. It took until lecture 23 that I fully understood why he had taken that approach. The science is extremely complicated, and factors change so quickly that It's almost impossible to create a forecast with high certainty.

The lectures follow an organized approach and flow together well. The graphics and highlighted portions are important adjuncts to the course, but many of these points are not included in the course guide. The guide is done poorly and is not worth purchasing separately, which is why it is not rated "5." Still, the course overall is very informative and useful

Dr. Robert G. Fovell is Professor of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he serves as cofounder and cochair of the Interdepartmental Program in Mathematics/Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. He earned his Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. A committed classroom teacher, Professor Fovell teaches courses on topics including atmospheric dynamics, thermodynamics, weather prediction and forecasting, and cloud dynamics. In 2005, he was awarded a UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award (the Harvey L. Eby Award for the Art of Teaching). He has also taken his insights to a broader audience while serving as a commentator for programs on the National Geographic Channel and the Discovery Channel. Outside the classroom, Professor Fovell is an active researcher. He is affiliated with UCLA's Institute of the Environment and the Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science and Engineering and is a member of the American Meteorological Society, the Royal Meteorological Society, and the American Geophysical Union. He has published extensively, particularly on the subjects of squall lines and storm dynamics, and has served as an associate editor of the Monthly Weather Review.
