Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absoulte Best!! This was an outstanding presentation of the life and music of Chopin. The presenters beautifully presented the life and music of Chopin. Speakers were both in Polish (subtitles in English) and English mixing performances of his works with his journey through life. Works were played on both pianos of Chopin's time and , more modern pianos., I would earnestly suggest that Wonderium create courses surrounding lives and works of anyone in the arts whose contributions any artist musical otherwise in this format. Excelsior!!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Low rating because Close Captioning is about 50% much needed with speech against music. Very annoying.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from You play Chopin or everyone else... In music school, as a pianist we were told this. You either play Chopin or you play everyone else. It was lovely to hear the music of course and the many pianists who were part of the dialogue. I would have preferred to learn more about the man instead of the music, which is glorious, but book after book has been written about the interpretation of the music. To learn about Fred's parents would explain how he so easily moved into French society and the aristocracy of the Poles b/c of the diaspora of the time. There is a Polish library in Paris where there is a wing dedicated to Chopin. The death mask and a cast of his left hand are there. Also- his Pleyal piano. (Which I touched as the girl who worked there was not looking.) Being a pianist myself, it was an electric energy to sneak that touch. I wish the commentators and director would have been more interested in the person, again. All in all, it was a delight. Too bad there is only that one photograph of him in all of life.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Enjoyed the music and back storieis I would have given this a 3 as this one did not talk to me as much as some others in the series, but my wife, who is a musician, would have given it a 5. So I split the difference. When she was learning piano she played a lot of Chopin and it was a delight for her to hear the stories of some of the music. I believe what the folks are trying to do here is show the circumstances of the composer’s life as they were when a piece of music was written. As this it works fine. Small gripe, the camera work of this series really bothers me. He goes in too tight on the interviewee’s faces. I do not need to see all their pores and count their teeth. He tends to over light the subjects also, frequently with the light coming from below, giving an almost ghostly effect at times. All in all, though we both enjoyed the presentation very much.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must watch and very well produced! Excellent course. It made my heart sing to listen to the music and the views of the different composers, pianists throughout this course. This is a bite sized course as opposed to some other classical music courses here on The Great Courses Plus. It gives you a good enough introduction to Chopin's life and music to appreciate it and go and explore his music in fuller detail. A really really good appetizer! Well done.
