Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Musical Homerun I have read books on Beethoven and taken Wonderium courses with Professor Greenberg in which various works were presented and explored. Other coverage seemed to center on his father's treatment and bad treatments for his progressive deafness. This course not only treated the major aspects of his music but reminded us about his earnest desire for a loving relationship with a woman that plagued him right up to his all too soon demise. This is one of t he finest treatments of his life I have encountered to date. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sumptuous and Stirring With some background on Beethoven, I was ready to travel mostly familiar paths, but this video brought out new dimensions. The descriptions and analyses by the different commentators were very interesting and thought provoking. The musical samples presented were superb. Especially enjoyed many of the piano works. I split it up into 3 viewing sessions as it was very dense. A true pleasure to watch and very moving.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from New appreciation of the genius of Beethoven I would have given this a 3 as it is light on facts, but my wife, who is a musician, would have given it a 5. So I split the difference. I believe what the folks are trying to do here is show the circumstances of the composer’s life as they were when a piece of music was written. As this it works fine. I knew that Beethoven had gone deaf, but I always thought it was towards the end of his life and career. It is amazing to think what he accomplished with beginning to go deaf do early in his adult life. One wonders what sort of karma he was living out to be given such a gift and to suffer so much in life. Small gripe, the camera work of this series really bothers me. He goes in too tight on the interviewee’s faces. I do not need to see all their pores and count their teeth. He tends to over light the subjects also, frequently with the light coming from below, giving an almost ghostly effect at times. All in all, thought we both enjoyed the presentation very much.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Emotional and Fascinating A piece of art. A pleasant experience to recognize and admire the work of a great master like Beethoven. Very interesting information and explanations. Listening to the pieces is a pleasant and emotional experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing I do not listen to classical music often and my knowledge in this area is limited. With this in mind I will heartily recommend this to everyone. The length seemed daunting when I looked at it but the time flew by and I was not ready for it to end. The music itself was magnificent of course with lots of it throughout and some of it was familiar even to me. What made this worth the time was the way it flowed through his life. It ties his personal life and historical events and people to the pieces of music. You get a greater understanding of the different pieces of music because you learn what he was experiencing when he wrote it. This knowledge lead to a deeper listening experience for me as I not only heard it but felt it as well. I urge everyone with even a passing interest in expanding their world a little to listen to this. Hopefully it will give you as much enjoyment as it gave me.
