Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quick survey of conversational skills The presenter, Anne Curzan, is very good. I have watched all 3 of her courses on Wondrium. Just as an aside her course, which sounds like it could be dry, English Grammar Boot Camp, was very entertaining. It is the same with this course; she does a great job of keeping the viewer engaged. Because I so enjoyed her other two courses is the main reason I watched this one. What this course is, is not a deep dive into conversation skills. She surfs across the tops of several different areas where conversation is important and important skills to use when conversing. Basically she whets you appetitive to learn more. I do have a little gripe with this course. I felt it as a little over-produced. An example would be the sound effects when a graphic appeared emphasizing a point. And what is up the ghost lightening when they did an aside, again to emphasize a point? Almost no one looks good when lit from below. I found the course interesting, and as long as you realize that after 6 short lessons that you will not be an expert, you will likely will too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A course exactly hitting blind spot in autistics. Most high functioning autistics need to learn from this course, since small talk skills are what is holding us back the most. Please somehow advertise it in the autistic community. Thanks for making it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not quite what I was hoping for I listened to this as an audio book and found it to be an engaging listen. I am somewhat awkward in conversation and was hoping that this would offer me specific techniques that I could use to strike up and stick with conversations. Instead Prof Curzan taught the purposes and value of different aspects of conversation. I do think it is important to become aware of your use of the word ummmm and to know that small talk isn't worthless. I liked listening to the course but I don't know if I can apply it to the conversations that I actually ought to have in order to not be so awkward at gatherings. Maybe that course doesn't exist and I just need to dive in?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Great Courses Instructors Make Learning Fun I have been purchasing many courses from TGC this year, and have learned much more than I hoped than hoped for, and it was fun. The Conversation Works was the latest purchase, but I have enjoyed the Nanotechnology course, Genetics course, Piano course, and plan to just keep on going. I will continue with the ancient history books, a special interest of mine.
